A compact glossary of standard linguistic terms (largely excluding figures of speech) with indicative examples, is offered to convey a range of problems to be met in compiling any reasonably structured thesaurus. When meeting a terminological problem that you cannot express to yourself, browse through these definitions and you may gain some idea of what it is that you are up against.

  24. This glossary is from Helen M. Townley's and Ralph D. Gee's book "Thesaurus Making-Grow Your Own Word Stock" (London, Andre Deutsch, 1980), used by permission. It has been slightly edited and put into the form of a Boswell's Companion Index Stack.

An Index stack is one type of output that Boswell's Companion can produce. Boswell's Companion 2.0 is a powerful tool for creating and managing collections of keywords and subject headings, glossaries and thesauri. It has special utilities for cross-referencing. It can produce Index stacks or a variety of styled or plain text files for use in word-processing, desktop publishing and database applications. Information about Boswell's Companion 2.0 is included in the download.
